Abstract

Ocean covers 72% of the earth's surface, and it is increasingly being recognized as a key solution to the sustainable development of human society. The United Nations has proclaimed a ‘Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development’ from 2021-2030. Among all types of ocean energy sources, ocean wave energy is the most common one with the property of high power density and large potential. However, the wide adoption of ocean wave energy is still facing challenges from different perspectives and in its infancy. In this talk, Dr. Li will talk about his work on the design, dynamic characterization, optimization, control, and experimental verification of ocean wave energy converters (WECs), and how it can benefit the development of the blue economy including ocean observation, offshore communication, marine agriculture, and desalination, etc.

海洋覆盖地球表面的72%,正日益被视为人类社会实现可持续发展的关键领域。联合国已将2021至2030年确立为“海洋科学促进可持续发展十年”。在各种海洋能源中,波浪能分布最广,具有功率密度高、潜力巨大的特点。然而,波浪能的广泛应用仍面临诸多挑战,目前尚处于发展初期。本次报告中,报告人将介绍其在波浪能转换装置的设计、动态特性分析、优化、控制及实验验证方面的研究工作,并探讨该技术如何助力蓝色经济发展,包括海洋观测、海上通信、海洋农业及海水淡化等领域。

Speaker

Prof. Xiaofan Li is currently an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. He obtained his BSc degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2015, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2020, both in Mechanical Engineering. He then completed his postdoc training at Virginia Tech and the University of Michigan. Before joining HKU in spring 2025, he worked as an Assistant Research Scientist in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he served as Principle Investigator for projects funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, and UMich internal funding.Prof. Li‘s research mainly focuses on marine renewable energy technology, including wave, offshore wind, and current energy. He was awarded the Virginia Tech Hord Fellowship and ASME Energy Harvesting Best Paper Award, and led different student teams to win several Marine Energy Collegiate Competition awards.

报告嘉宾简介

李潇凡教授现任香港大学机械工程系助理教授。他于2015年获西安交通大学机械工程学士学位,2020年获弗吉尼亚理工大学机械工程博士学位,随后在弗吉尼亚理工大学和密歇根大学完成博士后研究,并于2025年春季加入港大。报告人回国前任密歇根大学海洋结构与工程系助理研究员,并作为项目负责人主持美国国家科学基金会、美国能源部及密歇根大学内部资助的多个科研项目。其研究主要聚焦海洋可再生能源技术,涵盖波浪能、海上风能及海流能等领域。曾获弗吉尼亚理工大学Hord Fellowship及ASME能量采集最佳论文奖,并多次指导学生团队在海洋能源大学生竞赛中获奖。
