Applications of High-Temperature Superconducting Devices in Future Energy Systems:High-temperature superconducting materials have undergone forty years of development since their discovery. High-temperature superconducting devices are now beginning to be gradually applied in energy systems, scientific research equipment, and power systems. In particular, over the past decade, the current-carrying characteristics, magnetic-field characteristics, and uniformity of high-temperature superconducting materials have improved significantly.
This lecture will focus on more than ten years of research on high-temperature superconductivity carried out by the Applied Superconductivity Laboratory at the University of Strathclyde. The research includes the mechanisms and modelling of high-temperature superconductors, fully cryogenic superconducting propulsion systems, superconducting cable system analysis, superconducting ring-shaped magnets, and flux pumps. The lecture will also introduce related work with industry in the UK and Europe.
Development and Innovation of Fully Superconducting Motors for Electric Aircraft: This presentation will introduce the technological innovations, design methods, and experimental validation of a fully superconducting propulsion motor based on high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials, developed in collaboration with Airbus. The project addresses the need for high power density, high efficiency, and lightweight electrical machines for future electric and hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion. It explores a fully superconducting machine architecture in which HTS materials are used in both the rotor field windings and the stator AC windings.Drawing on the complete development process—from conceptual design and superconducting winding development to cryogenic system integration and full-machine testing—the presentation will discuss the key technical challenges involved in translating fully superconducting machines into practical engineering applications.
The presentation will focus on three main topics:
1. Design and testing of a brushless HTS rotor
This part will introduce approaches for exciting a superconducting rotor without conventional brushes or slip rings. Key issues including electromagnetic design of the HTS rotor windings, excitation methods, cryogenic operation, and rotor testing techniques will be discussed.
2. AC loss and impedance in multi-tape parallel AC windings
High-current superconducting machine windings often require multiple HTS tapes connected in parallel. This part will examine current sharing, AC losses, and equivalent impedance in multi-tape parallel windings, and discuss their implications for superconducting machine design and operation.
3. Key challenges in testing a fully superconducting motor
Based on the experimental testing of a 100 kW prototype, this part will highlight the challenges associated with operating and measuring an electrical machine under cryogenic conditions. Lessons learned from the development process, from initial design through to experimental validation, will also be presented.
Through these topics, the presentation aims to demonstrate the connection between fundamental issues at the HTS material and winding levels and the system-level integration and experimental validation of superconducting motors for aircraft propulsion.
