英国皇家工程院院士、清华大学杰出访问教授、

Good afternoon.

大家下午好。

It is a profound honour to stand before you today. Over the years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with Tsinghua colleagues on multiple research initiatives and academic exchanges, and I have always been struck by the intellectual vitality and rigorous scholarship that define this great institution. To be invited to address you on this milestone day in your professional life is truly a humbling experience and unparalleled honour.

今天能站在这里,我深感荣幸。多年来,我有幸与清华同仁在多个研究项目和学术交流中合作,始终被这所伟大学府所展现的学术活力与严谨学风所打动。能在你们职业生涯中这一里程碑式的日子受邀致辞,我倍感谦卑,也深感荣幸。

Let me begin with a reflection. When I was asked to speak, I asked myself: what can I possibly say to a group of brilliant young scholars who have just completed their studies at one of the world’s most prestigious universities? You have been educated in an environment that blends academic excellence with a deep sense of social responsibility. What wisdom could I offer that your distinguished professors have not already instilled in you?

请允许我从一个思考开始。当被邀请发言时,我问自己:面对一群刚刚在全球最负盛名的大学之一完成学业的杰出青年学子,我能说些什么?你们所接受的教育,既包含卓越的学术标准,也承载深厚的社会责任感。各位尊敬的教授们已经给予你们如此丰富的教诲,我还能贡献什么见解呢?

Perhaps, the answer lies not in grand pronouncements, but in a few observations drawn from my own journey.

也许,答案不在于宏大的说教,而在于我自身历程中的几点观察。

I began my career in part of former Yugoslavia, what is now Serbia, moved to Australia, and eventually settled in the United Kingdom almost thirty years ago. Along the way, I have had the privilege of serving as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, and current IEEE Power & Energy Society Vice President Publications, chairing numerous international conferences, and leading and contributing to the work of IEEE, CIGRE, and CIRED working groups and task forces. But throughout all these experiences, one truth has become increasingly clear: the power systems we study and build are not merely networks of wires, transformers, generators, and renewable energy — they are the backbone of modern civilization.

我的职业生涯始于前南斯拉夫——也就是如今的塞尔维亚,之后前往澳大利亚,最终在近三十年前定居英国。一路走来,我有幸担任过《IEEE电力系统汇刊》主编,现任IEEE电力与能源学会出版事务副主席,主持过众多国际会议,并领导和参与了IEEE、CIGRE和CIRED多个工作组和工作团队的工作。但所有这些经历让我愈发清晰地认识到一个真理:我们所研究和建设的电力系统,不仅仅是电线、变压器、发电机和可再生能源的集合——它们是现代文明的支柱。

Today, you are graduating into a world that is more electrified, more interconnected, and more uncertain than ever before. The energy transition is reshaping every aspect of our field. Renewable generation, power electronics, energy storage, artificial intelligence, and data analytics are not just technical trends — they are fundamental forces redefining how we generate, transmit, and utilise electricity. The systems you will design, operate, and improve must be not only efficient and reliable, but also resilient, flexible, affordable and sustainable.

今天,你们毕业之际所面对的世界,比以往任何时候都更加电气化、更加互联、也更加充满不确定性。能源转型正在重塑我们领域的方方面面。可再生能源、电力电子技术、储能、人工智能和数据分析不仅仅是技术趋势——它们是重新定义我们如何发电、输电和用电的根本性力量。你们将要设计、运行和完善的系统,不仅需要高效可靠,还必须具备韧性、灵活性、经济性和可持续性。

This is both a formidable challenge and an extraordinary opportunity.

这既是巨大的挑战,也是非凡的机遇。

Over the years, I have collaborated with colleagues from Tsinghua University on many occasions — from early research on load modelling and power quality analysis, to co-founding the "Seminar for Next Generation of Researchers in Power Systems," to our joint work within the IEEE Energy Internet Coordination Committee. I have seen first-hand the intellectual rigor, creativity, and dedication that Tsinghua scholars bring to every endeavour. You carry that same legacy forward.

多年来,我与清华同仁有过多次合作——从早期的负荷建模和电能质量分析研究,到共同发起“电力系统未来学者论坛”,再到在IEEE能源互联网协调委员会中的联合工作。我亲眼见证了清华学者在每一个领域所展现的学术严谨、创造力和奉献精神。你们传承着同样的精神。

So, what should you take with you as you step into the next phase of your lives?

那么,当你们走向人生下一阶段时,应该带上什么?

First, embrace uncertainty. In our field, uncertainty is not an inconvenience — it is the fundamental condition of the systems we study. The probabilistic modelling and risk-based assessment that my research group has pursued for decades are not mere academic exercises; they reflect a deeper truth: the world is inherently unpredictable. Your ability to navigate uncertainty, to make sound decisions with incomplete information, and to adapt when conditions change — these will define your success far more than any single technical skill.

第一,拥抱不确定性。在我们这个领域,不确定性不是一种麻烦——它是我们所研究系统的基本属性。我的研究团队数十年来致力于概率建模和基于风险的评估,这不仅仅是学术探索;它们反映了一个更深层的真理:世界本质上是不可预测的。你们驾驭不确定性的能力、在信息不完整的情况下做出合理决策的能力、以及在条件变化时迅速适应的能力——这些将比任何单一的技术技能更能定义你们的成功。

Second, think systemically. As scholars and researchers, we are trained to solve problems. But the most consequential challenges of our time — climate change, energy poverty, the digital divide — cannot be solved in isolation. They require systems thinking: understanding how components interact, how local actions produce global consequences, and how technical solutions must be embedded in social, economic, and political contexts. Be problem-solvers, yes, by all means. But also, please, be systems thinkers considering all aspects of the problem that you are trying to solve as different angles will enrich your solutions.

第二,系统性思考。作为学者和研究者,我们被训练去解决问题。但我们时代最重大的挑战——气候变化、能源贫困、数字鸿沟——无法孤立地解决。它们需要系统性思维:理解各组成部分如何相互作用,局部行动如何产生全局影响,技术解决方案如何嵌入社会、经济和政治背景中。是的,要做问题解决者,这毫无疑问。但也请务必成为系统思考者,从不同角度审视你所试图解决的问题,因为多元的视角会让你的解决方案更加丰富。

Third, never stop learning. I have published over 600 research papers, supervised over 40 PhD students, and given nearly 200 lectures around the world. Yet every day, I encounter something I do not know. Some of the tools and technologies you learnt at Tsinghua — will become obsolete within a decade. What will not become obsolete is your capacity to learn, to question, and to reinvent yourself. Cultivate that capacity relentlessly.

第三,永不停歇地学习。我发表了600多篇研究论文,指导了40多名博士生,在全球进行了近200场讲座。然而每一天,我都会遇到自己不知道的东西。你们在清华学到的工具和技术——其中一些将在十年内过时。但不会过时的是你们学习的能力、质疑的能力和自我重塑的能力。不懈地培养这种能力。

Fourth, build bridges. The challenges we face in the power sector — and in the world — do not respect national borders. I have been a visiting professor at different universities in Serbia, Australia, and the United Kingdom. I have supervised and worked with over one hundred researchers from over thirty countries from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Every collaboration has enriched my understanding, expanded what we could achieve together and above all made me a better and more compete person. You, as graduates and postdoctoral researchers of Tsinghua University — one of the most internationally connected universities in China — are uniquely positioned to be bridge-builders. Seize that opportunity and embrace responsibility that goes with it.

第四,搭建桥梁。我们在电力行业——以及在世界范围内——面临的挑战不分国界。我曾在塞尔维亚、澳大利亚和英国的多所大学担任访问教授,指导并合作过一百多名来自亚洲、欧洲、美洲和非洲等三十多个国家的研究人员。每一次合作都丰富了我的理解,拓展了我们共同取得的成就,最重要的是,让我成为一个更优秀、更完整的人。作为清华大学的毕业生和出站博士后——清华是中国国际化程度最高的大学之一——你们拥有得天独厚的条件成为桥梁的搭建者。抓住这一机遇,并承担随之而来的责任。

Finally, remember why you chose this path. We do not build power systems for their own sake. We build them so that a child in a remote village can study at night; so that a hospital can save lives; so that industries can innovate and economies can grow; so that the world can transition to a cleaner, affordable and more sustainable future. Your work matters — not because of the circuits you design or the algorithms you write, but because of the lives they touch.

最后,记住你们为什么选择这条道路。我们建设电力系统,不是为了建设而建设。我们建设它们,是为了让偏远村庄的孩子能在夜晚学习;是为了让医院能拯救生命;是为了让工业能够创新、经济能够增长;是为了让世界能够向更清洁、更经济、更可持续的未来转型。你们的工作之所以重要——不是因为你们设计的电路或编写的算法,而是因为它们所触及的生命。

Class of 2026, you are graduating at a pivotal moment. The world is counting on scholars and professionals like you to lead the energy transition, to innovate with purpose, and to build a future that is both prosperous and just. I have every confidence that you will rise to the occasion.

2026届的同学们,你们在一个关键的历史时刻毕业。世界正期待着像你们这样的学者和专业人士引领能源转型,以使命驱动创新,建设一个既繁荣又公正的未来。我深信,你们一定能够不负众望。

Congratulations on your achievement. Celebrate with your families and friends today. And tomorrow — go and change the world.
